where we belong. where we make mistakes. where we make magic.

I’m Heidi Marie Ochoa, a Communication Studies professor, theatre director, and lifelong believer in the power of people to surprise themselves.

Since 2006, I’ve been teaching, directing, coaching, and building community at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California. My work lives at the intersection of communication, performance, education, and belonging. Whether I’m in a classroom helping students find their voices or in a rehearsal room bringing a production to life, I’m interested in what happens when people feel safe enough to take risks, try something new, and discover what they’re capable of doing.

I believe we learn by doing, grow by making mistakes, and create something extraordinary when we make room for one another.

Theatre Is About More Than the Stage

As a theatre director at Saddleback College, my job is about more than putting on a show. It’s about elevating student work, creating opportunities for emerging artists, and building an environment where different perspectives can coexist, challenge one another, and make the work better.

A rehearsal room might contain twenty different interpretations of a single script—and that’s the magic. My role is to help those voices find their place, listen to one another, and work together toward something bigger than any one person.

Over the years, I’ve directed productions, developed original interpreter’s theatre, and collaborated with students on performances exploring identity, social justice, disability access, educational equity, memory, and the human experience. My work in performance has received regional, state, and national recognition, but the accomplishment I value most is helping students discover confidence in themselves and their creative abilities.

At its best, community college theatre is a place where we make theatre, make mistakes, and make magic.

Teaching, Leading, and Building Belonging

My work as an educator extends beyond the classroom. With graduate degrees in Communication Studies and Theatre Arts and Dance, I bring together my interests in rhetoric, interpersonal communication, performance, comedy, pedagogy, and theatre for social change.

I’ve coached Saddleback College’s Speech and Debate Team, served in college and statewide leadership roles, mentored faculty, and contributed to curriculum, planning, and institutional initiatives. I’ve also helped create opportunities for conversations about inclusion, equity, and the experiences of students whose voices are too often overlooked.

My commitment to inclusion is especially meaningful in my work with neurodivergent students. As a co-adviser and co-chair of Saddleback College’s Neurodiversity Student Union, I support efforts to build a campus community where students can connect, advocate, and participate. Through inclusive theatre experiences, including Readers Theatre, I believe we can create opportunities for neurodivergent students to explore performance, develop confidence, and experience the joy of making something together.

I’m continually reminded that belonging isn’t something we simply announce. It’s something we create through our choices, our relationships, and the opportunities we make available to others.

Behind the Scenes: The Work That Makes the Magic

This website is an invitation to look beyond the finished production.

Through behind-the-scenes videos, social media storytelling, and glimpses into the creative process, I want to celebrate the students, artists, designers, technicians, collaborators, and educators who make theatre happen. I want to share the questions, experiments, unexpected discoveries, and occasional mishaps that are part of bringing a production to life.

My goal is to use this website as a home base for that content and a way to connect people with our social media community, where the work continues between rehearsals, performances, and productions.

Whether you’re a prospective student, a current performer, an alumnus, a theatre enthusiast, an educator, or a member of our local community, I hope you’ll find something here that makes you curious about what we’re creating at Saddleback College.

Because the magic isn’t only what happens when the curtain rises. It’s everything that happens along the way.

A Little More About Me

I’m an educator by profession, a theatre-maker by passion, and a community builder at heart. I’m also a wife, a mom of two, and someone who believes that our experiences—especially the messy, unexpected, and imperfect ones—shape how we show up for others.

My own path has taught me that growth rarely follows a perfectly rehearsed script. Sometimes we stumble. Sometimes we improvise. Sometimes we discover that the thing we thought was a mistake becomes the beginning of something wonderful.

That philosophy informs how I teach, how I direct, and how I try to move through the world.

I’m drawn to stories that help us see one another differently, creative experiences that bring people together, and communities where people can show up as themselves and discover what they have to offer.

And I’m always interested in what we can make when we give one another room to grow.
